Changes to Zoning Employees

Recently the township accepted the resignations of Jim Yorks and Janice DeAngelis. Jim has been a member of the Zoning Commission for the past 7½ years. Janice has been a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the past 7½ years, as well as being the ZBA Chairman. We would like to let them know that they have been greatly appreciated for their contribution to Amherst Township.

For the Zoning Commission:

  • Hank Harsar has moved from the Alternate #1 position to a Zoning Commission member.
  • Glenn Thome has moved from the Alternate #2 position to the Alternate #1 position.
  • The Alternate #2 position remains open at this time.

For the Zoning Board of Appeals:

  • Marcie Jaworski has moved from the Alternate #2 position to a ZBA member.
  • Joan Whitman was recently appointed to the Alternate #2 position.

If other Amherst Township residents are interested in getting involved as an alternate on either the Zoning Commission or the Zoning Board of Appeals, please contact Neil Lynch at 988-7681.

The Zoning Commission meets on a monthly basis on the first Tuesday of the month. The ZBA holds an organizational meeting in January and three (3) “Conditional Use” meetings in February/March. All other ZBA meetings are on an "as required" basis, averaging three (3) additional meetings per year.

A message from
the Sheriff’s Dept.

The Lorain County Sheriff's Department has recently hired two new Deputies. This is good news, as it will allow for another Deputy to be assigned as a "Community Policing Officer'. The total number of "CPO's' in Lorain County will again be at three, allowing more time for our CPO to be involved in the activities in our township.

Please be aware that there have been quite a few "car break-ins", especially in the Hidden Valley area. All residents should:

  • Keep your doors locked – house & auto
  • Turn outside lights on
  • Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle!

Twp. Bulletin Board

Scheduled meetings and Trustee Work Sessions are regularly posted in the bulletin board at the Township Hall. These are public meetings and residents are welcome to attend.

As part of Pride Day, wood chips were spread and flowers were planted at the Amherst Township Hall and the Amherst Township Park on Middle Ridge Road. Planters were also hung at the Township Hall. We would like to thank the following businesses for their donations to this project:

  • Thome Farms – hanging pots 9060 State Route 58 (in Amh Twp)
  • Don Mould’s – flowers 8676 State Route 58 (in Amh Twp)
  • North Shore Landscape – mulch 6001 Baumhart Road, Lorain

Recycling Incentive Contest

In April, Amherst Township held a raffle in conjunction with the township's "dumpster event" as an incentive program to encourage residents to recycle more. Residents brought a raffle form along with a blue bag of recyclables or recyclable yard waste to the dumpster event. This incentive program is an eligibility requirement of the "Solid Waste Grant" award received by Amherst Township.

Items that may be recycled in the blue bags are:

  • "1" and "2" plastics (HDPE and PETE)
  • Bi-metal cans (canned food cans)
  • Aluminum cans
  • Glass beverage bottles
  • Newspapers

Newspapers are to be placed in a separate blue bag from the rest of the recyclables. Also, please rinse all food and beverage containers before placing them in a blue bag.

Permits Required

Residents are reminded that permits are needed for pools, decks, porches, patios, gazebos, fences, ponds, signs, garages, new construction, building additions, accessory buildings, and driveways. When a permit is obtained before the start of construction, the fee will be reduced by 50%. Be sure you or your contractor has obtained a permit. Payments must be made by check only. Cash is not accepted.

Please contact Don Gargas, Amherst Township Zoning Inspector for these permits. Office hours for the Zoning Inspector are from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. He can be reached at 988-5866. Voice Mail is checked daily.

"Building inspections" through the Lorain County Building Department may also be required. These building "inspections" are in addition to the building "permits" that are required from the Township. The Amherst Township Zoning Inspector can assist you for both of these requirements. A building "permit" from the township is required before applying for the building "inspection" from the county. Permits for both the township and the county may be viewed on the township’s website under "zoning".

Amherst Township, as a member of the Sandstone Joint Ambulance District, has chosen "LifeCare" to be their ambulance provider.
